PAUL CHAMBERLIN

CAIRNS: The take-off of a VIP aircraft carrying the Leader of the National Party, Mr Fischer, was suddenly aborted in Cairns yesterday.

The pilot hit the brakes when a warning light indicated that one of the Falcon 900's three engines had failed. Instead, however, it appeared that one of the two computer warning systems had failed.

A week ago, a plane carrying a retiring National Party MP, Mr Peter Fisher, was forced to circle Horsham Airport twice so control tower officials could check whether the wheels were down properly. On Wednesday, bad weather at Townsville forced pilots of a 707 carrying the Opposition Leader, Dr Hewson, to pull out of their first landing approach.
